The Importance of Choosing the Right Garage Door

Hey everyone!

I’m going to be putting pen to paper on the LONG details from the reno on the blog for you!

Let’s start outside.

I want to share my experience selecting garage doors. To be honest, before this project, I never really gave much thought to garage doors. I kinda had it in my head that a garage door was…well... just a garage door! That couldn’t be further from the truth.

When planning this renovation, our existing garage doors were old, tired and noisy. They definitely needed to be changed out and improved upon. When researching garage doors, I was really impressed with Garaga. I also asked some friends and neighbours who have Garaga garage doors, and they love them! I also learned three really cool things about Garaga:

1. They are a Canadian, family-owned business that employ more than 350 people in Canada and in the USA

2. Since 1983, they have manufactured more that 3.6 million garage doors

3. They are DAMN good! Their garage doors are so well manufactured that they’ve been helping to insulate the Manic 5Dam in northern Quebec since 199...Greg thought that was pretty cool, too!

To get started, I went to the Garaga website. It was easy to use and provided lots of useful information. What was really fun was using the tool where I could upload a picture of our home and “try on” different door styles. This was so helpful and let me see what door styles looked the best. I could also add windows and door accessories. They had some great options, which really helped make the right decision for our home. I eventually decided on Carriage House Style doors from Garaga’s Township Collection. They totally suited the modern farmhouse look I was hoping to achieve and really made the house pop.

One factor to consider when choosing the garage doors was the level of insulation or R- value of the doors. Although we won’t be spending a ton of time in the garage, Greg will likely be tinkering around in there, so having some insulation was important.

The next step was to have someone come out to take measurements. In comes Car-Wal. I learned there is no such thing as a "common garage door size.” Not only did the rep take measurements, but it was an opportunity to discuss options on everything from accessories to R-value to ensure I had made the best choice for this project. I was so glad to have gone to garage door specialists so I was 100% sure that I was getting the right information and the best options for our home.

Then, finally, installation! In less than a day, Car-Wal had the old garage doors were removed and the new ones were put in. What a difference!! They are so gorgeous!!

If you're thinking of replacing your garage doors or planning or starting a new build, don’t overlook the importance of garage doors. When I chose Garaga doors I learned:

1. Garage doors are one of the biggest moving parts in your home

2. Garage doors are ranked amongst the 5 most profitable home renovations

3. Garaga doors will last more than 25 years!
